Increase Your Productivity With Claude Skills
Claude Skills represent a fundamental shift from manual "prompting" to AI tools that truly understand your needs and can accomplish tasks perfectly every time (and are a tool we will teach about in our April 15 virtual Claude workshop).
Skills transform Claude from a basic chatbot into a personalized AI operating system by encoding specific workflows, instructions, and expertise into reusable modules. Unlike traditional prompting, which requires re-explaining tasks in every new conversation, skills allow you to teach Claude a process once so it can execute it consistently every time.
Let’s take a look at how skills work, key benefits of using skills and how to create your first one. Keep reading below…

How Skills Work
A skill is essentially an instruction manual or "playbook" that tells Claude exactly how to perform a specific task, what tools to use, and what standards to meet. You teach Claude a process once, and it can use it whenever needed.
For example, you can build a skill that knows your specific brand standards (logo, colors, fonts) and uses them when building websites and presentations.
Anthropic also has pre-made skills, ready-to-use instruction manuals created by Anthropic and its collaborators to handle common workflows without requiring you to build them from scratch. Examples include pre-made skills for generating high-quality files in formats like PDF, DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX.
Unlike files or manual prompts that you must tell Claude to read, skills fire automatically. Claude recognizes (or should recognize - this sometimes misfires) the task from your input and activates the relevant Skill on its own.
Key Benefits of Using Skills
They’re everywhere: Unlike "Projects," which are locked to specific workspaces, skills work account-wide and are portable. Once installed, they work across the Claude website, the desktop app, Cowork, inside chats and in projects.
Reduced token usage: Claude only reads the frontmatter of your skills initially. It then loads the full, heavy instructions when it decides the Skill will help. This can reduce token usage significantly.
Consistent quality: Skills ensure that outputs hit the same quality standards every time, making them ideal for tasks where brand voice, specific formatting, or multi-step logic is critical.
Creating and Installing Skills
Claude has a built-in "skill-creator" that interviews you about a task and automatically generates the necessary files.

You can turn past successful conversations or prompts into skills by asking Claude to analyze the patterns of your best work and package them into a reusable framework.
To use a Skill, you upload the zipped Skill folder via the Customize tab in Claude. Once uploaded and toggled on, the Skill becomes a permanent part of your Claude profile.
