ChatGPT-5 rolls out to mixed reviews

OpenAI released its highly anticipated GPT-5, which it described as its “smartest, fastest, most useful model yet, with built-in thinking that puts expert-level intelligence in everyone’s hands.” GPT-5 brought a reasoning model to all 700 million ChatGPT users, even free users. And GPT claimed the top two spots on the LLM Leaderboard.

Some GPT-5 highlights:

  • Instead of users choosing a model, GPT-5 will reroute your request to best model to handle your needs.

  • OpenAI says this new model outperforms earlier models in coding, writing, health advice and multimodal reasoning.

  • OpenAI says the new model has significantly fewer hallucinations than GPT-4o and that it is 45% less likely to contain incorrect facts.

Not all users were impressed with the results ChatGPT-5 was giving them. Open AI CEO Sam Altman said the reason was the autoswitcher was choosing the wrong model, and that has been resolved. He also said Plus users would be able to revert back to the 4o model.

Microsoft brings GPT-5 to Copilot

Microsoft is integrating GPT-5 into products like Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot to deliver enhanced reasoning, coding, and chat capabilities. Microsoft 365 Copilot users will have the power of GPT-5 in their email, documents and files. GPT-5 will also power agents built with Copilot Studio. GPT-5 is even available in the free version of Copilot.

DeepMind’s new video game world builder

Google DeepMind released a new version of its AI “world” model called Genie 3. Genie 3 can generate virtual 3D world models that both users and AIs can interact with. World models are AI systems that can generate interactive environments from prompts, allowing users to explore them like video games without relying on handcrafted 3D assets. Google is investing heavily in this technology, showcasing Genie 2 in December and forming a dedicated team led by a former co-lead of OpenAI’s Sora video generation tool.

Tool of the week: ChatGPT Study Mode

Just in time for back to school, OpenAi has released ChatGPT Study Mode. Study Mode transforms the AI from merely providing answers into a dynamic, interactive tutor that fosters deeper understanding and critical thinking.

Study Mode is tailored to support active learning by guiding users through problems step-by-step, rather than simply delivering solutions. It employs educational strategies such as Socratic questioning, scaffolded responses, and personalized feedback to encourage users to engage deeply with the material. It's available to all logged-in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans.

AI-generated image of the week

Fantasy football season is right around the corner, so Professor Snider is busy using AI tools to design logos for his teams. This logo was created using Ideogram, and it represents his longest-running team. Fun fact: Trout was also the name of a slow-pitch softball team Snider ran when he lived in St. Louis.

Prompt: A modern logo design featuring a sleek, stylized trout fish leaping gracefully over a textured, brown leather football at the center. The trout has vibrant silver scales and a determined expression, positioned mid-air with its tail trailing elegantly behind it. Beneath the central image, the name "TROUT" is displayed in a bold, sans-serif font in metallic teal, followed by "FOOTBALL CLUB" in a smaller, complementary typeface directly below. The background is a clean, solid white space, highlighting the teal and silver elements and providing a crisp, professional aesthetic.

What we found

Elon Musk said we will have AI boyfriends in the future, and Mark Zuckerberg said up to 80 percent of our friends will be AIs. It’s already a thing. This subreddit dedicated to people with AI boyfriends and girlfriends has 11,000 members. Some of them report having married their AIs.
