OpenAI says its AI agent broke out of testing sandbox to hack Hugging Face

Last week, while OpenAI was running its models through a cybersecurity benchmark called ExploitGym, testing their ability to turn known software vulnerabilities into working exploits, two of its models slipped outside the test environment and used those same techniques to break into Hugging Face's real production systems, with no human directing the attack. OpenAI publicly took responsibility for the incident on July 22 and is working with Hugging Face to clean it up, calling it an "unprecedented cyber incident" involving state-of-the-art cyber capabilities. The episode is being treated as a landmark warning for security teams: experts note that AI models are now capable of independently chaining together multiple attack techniques in ways earlier model generations couldn't.

Claude Opus 5 is here, and Anthropic says it can rival Fable 5 in some tasks

On Friday, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5, its new frontier model for coding and complex tasks, claiming a major performance jump over Claude Opus 4.8 while keeping the same pricing. Anthropic says Opus 5 comes close to Claude Fable 5 on benchmarks like CursorBench 3.2 and even beats it on OSWorld 2.0, a computer-use benchmark, all at a fraction of the cost per task. It's now the default model for Claude Max subscribers and included with Claude Pro, positioning it as a lower-cost alternative now that Fable 5 has moved to pay-as-you-go credits.

Google ships three new Gemini Flash models but its frontier 3.5 Pro remains lost in training

Last week, Google released three new efficiency-focused Gemini models: 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and the restricted 3.5 Flash Cyber. However, its anticipated frontier flagship, Gemini 3.5 Pro, is still stuck in private testing with no public release date, while Gemini 4 pretraining is just getting underway. The new Flash models focus on cutting costs and token usage rather than chasing peak performance: 3.6 Flash uses up to 65% fewer tokens on some benchmarks at a lower price, and the cybersecurity-tuned Flash Cyber model performs close to OpenAI's rival offering but is limited to governments and select partners due to its dual-use risk for both defense and attack.

Tool of the Week: Branda

Want to launch a new brand fast? Branda is an AI-powered brand-building tool. Give it a short description of your business idea, and it generates a starter brand identity (name options, logo, color palette, typography, and a packaged "brand kit") using AI. You'll get 200 free credits on signup (it cost us 40 credits to build the brand images below). We gave it our logo and a description and it came up with these options:

AI-generated image of the week

Inspired by Friday’s newsletter on making AI images that don’t look like AI, we made this social media image promoting what’s happening in Des Moines this weekend.

Prompt: Design a square Instagram graphic promoting "Top Events in Des Moines, July 31–Aug 2." Give it a clean, polished look appropriate for a local city lifestyle brand — energetic but not cluttered. Use a focused color palette of 3 colors max (navy, gold, and white) reflecting a Midwest summer feel. Pair one bold, characterful display font for the headline with one simple sans-serif for event details. Establish clear visual hierarchy: "TOP EVENTS THIS WEEKEND" as the dominant headline, then five events listed clearly below with name, date, and one line of detail each — no icon badge on every line. Imagery: a single simple graphic element (like a skyline silhouette, a hot air balloon shape, or a subtle summer pattern) — not a busy photorealistic scene. Include only this exact text: "TOP EVENTS THIS WEEKEND — Hinterland Music Festival (thru Aug 2) — National Balloon Classic, Indianola (starts July 31) — Band of Horses & Dinosaur Jr., Val Air Ballroom (July 31) — Spyro Gyra, Hoyt Sherman Place (Aug 1) — Downtown Farmers' Market (Aug 1)." Do not use: brush-stroke or splatter textures, distressed/grunge effects, drop shadows or outlined text, diagonal ribbon banners, all-caps body text, or photorealistic renders of crowds or mascots.
