ChatGPT Apps Are Here
Your guide to getting the most out of generative AI tools
OpenAI this week released Apps in ChatGPT, a major update that transforms ChatGPT from a chat assistant into a hub for integrated tools. Users can access third-party apps like Canva, Spotify, Zillow, Expedia, Figma, and Coursera directly inside ChatGPT — no separate tabs required.
Here’s how it works: you can simply invoke apps by name in conversation (for example, “Spotify, make me a playlist for my dinner party” or “Zillow, find homes in Des Moines under $400K”). ChatGPT will automatically bring the app into the chat, get your permission if needed, and handle the request in one seamless workflow.
Apps may also appear contextually. If you’re planning a trip, ChatGPT might suggest Expedia. If you’re designing a presentation, Canva could pop up as a recommended tool.
These apps are now available for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro ChatGPT users (outside the EU for now), and OpenAI says more apps and regions will be added soon. Developers can also start building their own integrations using the new Apps SDK, which extends the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — an open standard that ensures apps built for ChatGPT can run across platforms that support MCP.
Every app follows OpenAI’s safety and privacy requirements, with clear consent screens, minimal data collection, and strict policy compliance.
This marks a big shift: ChatGPT isn’t just a chat assistant anymore — it’s a platform where work, creativity, and exploration happen in one place.

Testing the apps: Zillow and Spotify
Below I used the prompt, “Zillow, find homes in Des Moines under $400K.” You can see that it brought up a map with homes for sale directly in ChatGPT. I can interact with the map or continue my chat below the map.

When I click through to a home, I get this screen, which gives me photos and more info about each house:

Here’s what the Spotify example looks like. The songs don’t actually play in ChatGPT. Clicking the + button adds the playlist to my Spotify account. But anywhere else I click opens a new window to play in Spotify.
