10 things you might not know you can do in ChatGPT
Your guide to getting the most out of generative AI tools
Get more value out of ChatGPT with these features
ChatGPT has come a long way from the chat tool that launched in November of 2022. But many users are still not getting the most out of new ChatGPT capabilities and features.
As we prepare for our Oct. 14 workshop designed to help you Become a ChatGPT Power User (more info on that below), we wanted to share some things you might not be aware that you can do in ChatGPT.
1. Choose a reasoning model
Prior to the release of GPT-5, ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman said that less than 7 percent of Plus (paid!) user had used a reasoning models. Reasoning models like GPT-5 are LLMs enhanced with reinforcement learning to handle more complex tasks. They generate an internal chain of thought before responding, which makes them especially strong at complex problem-solving, coding, scientific reasoning, and multi-step planning for agentic workflows. In short, they “think” before they respond.
ChatGPT 5 automatically chooses a reasoning model when it thinks one is needed for a prompt.
2. Call 1-800-CHAT-GPT
Need to access ChatGPT’s voice mode in a pinch? Give 1-800-ChatGPT a call. The service is free for anyone for 30 minutes per month.
3. Make a Powerpoint presentation
Want a head start on a Powerpoint deck for your next presentation? Simply include that in your prompt (“Create a Powerpoint presentation about ____”) and ChatGPT will create a Powerpoint file for you. It won't be the prettiest of Powerpoint slide decks, but it will give you a starting point for your next presentation.

4. Access and create Custom GPTs
Custom GPTs are versions of ChatGPT that you can tailor to do specific tasks by combining instructions, knowledge, and capabilities. Paid users can make their own Custom GPTs. All users can access GPTs in the GPT Store with message limits. Here’s an example - a GPT that writes marketing copy.
5. Choose a personality
A ChatGPT personality is the style and tone it uses to respond, shaping how answers feel. Go to Settings, then Personalization and then Enable customization to choose from four different ChatGPT personalities - cynic, robot, listener and nerd. You can give ChatGPT additional custom instructions (such as “don’t use em dases”) in the same area.

6. Deep Research
Deep Research is a tool that uses reasoning, web search, and file/data source integration to complete complex online tasks and deliver documented reports. Users start by selecting it from the tools menu, describing their task, and confirming details as needed.
Tasks typically finish within minutes and can be interrupted or redirected at any time. Availability, speed, and usage limits depend on the user’s plan, with task allowances resetting every 30 days for fixed plans.
Is there a topic our question you’ve been meaning to do some research on but haven’t had the time? Try Deep Research.
7. Learn something new with Study Mode
Study mode in ChatGPT is an interactive learning feature that helps you build deeper understanding of topics. It uses Socratic-style questions, step-by-step guidance, and personalized responses (with memory on) to support your learning. It can break down concepts, check your understanding, and even reference uploaded materials like images or PDFs.
You can enable it by selecting Tools → Study and learn in the prompt window.
8. Record a meeting
Record mode lets ChatGPT transcribe and summarize audio recordings (e.g., meetings, brainstorms, voice notes). Summaries are saved as canvases that can be turned into outputs like project plans, emails, or code. ChatGPT can also reference past recordings for continuity. Each session is limited to 120 minutes, with longer ones stopping automatically and saved as a private canvas.
9. Try Agent mode
ChatGPT agent is a tool that tackles complex online tasks by reasoning, researching, and taking actions for you (like browsing sites, working with files, accessing third-party data, filling forms, or editing spreadsheets) while keeping you in control. It uses tools such as a visual browser, code interpreter, connectors, and a terminal, with tasks usually finishing in 5–30 minutes.
You can start agent mode from the tools menu or by typing /agent, then describe your task. The agent will ask for clarification as needed and can be guided or interrupted anytime. It’s available on Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, with monthly message limits depending on the plan (e.g., Plus: 40, Pro: 400).
10. Create images
ChatGPT Images lets you create visuals by either describing what you want or selecting Create image from the tools menu. It can follow detailed instructions (like adding text, specific elements, or transparent backgrounds) and also edit existing images. Just upload a file and describe the changes you’d like.
